Course Summary

Successful completion of this nationally recognised qualification will enable the individual to apply for an SIA licence to work in the private security industry as a security guard.

Is the BIIAB Level 2 Award in Security Guarding for me?

Anyone wishing to be employed as a security guard has to be in possession of a licence issued to them by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The BIIAB Level 2 Award in Security Guarding is a nationally recognised industry standard qualification and successful completion of this course, accompanied by a confirmed identity and criminal records check, will enable a security guard to apply for an (SIA) licence to practice. The unit structure reduces overlap between subject areas making it easier for learners to gain qualifications for additional sectors such as CCTV or Door Supervision as they will only need to sit the additional units. What does the course actually involve?

Unit 1 - Working in the Private Security Industry (1 day)

This covers those areas of content that are common across different sub-sectors. Topics include legislation relevant to the private security industry; health and safety in the workplace; fire safety principles; dealing with emergencies; effective communication and customer care. The module is followed by a 40 minute multiple choice examination where candidates are required to answer 20 of the 25 questions correctly.

Unit 2 - Working as a Security Officer (1 day)

This covers the knowledge and understanding for areas that are relevant to the role of a security officer within the private security industry. Topics include the importance of, and reasons for, patrolling; how to control access to and egress from a site; basic search procedures; the purpose and function of different types of technology, security and monitoring systems in the security environment; the law and its relevance to the role of a security officer; and the importance and purpose of reporting and record keeping. The module is followed by a 60 minute examination candidates will be required to answer 28 of the 40 questions correctly.

Unit 3 - Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry (1 day)

This covers knowledge and skills that are relevant to front line roles. Topics include the principles of conflict management; recognising, assessing and reducing risk in conflict situations; effective communication; problem solving strategies and good post-conflict practice. The module is followed by a 45 minute multiple choice examination where candidates are required to answer 20 of the 30 questions correctly.

How much will the course cost me?

The total cost of the course is £225.00 excluding VAT which covers tuition, handbook, examination fees, certificates and tea and coffee refreshments.

Alternatively, candidates can choose to complete the modules separately as standalone qualifications at a cost of £120.00 per unit excluding VAT. This is useful where a candidate already holds an SIA licence to work as a door supervisor but would like to complete an additional module such as 'Working as a Security Guard' to give them greater insight into working as a security guard.

How long will it take me to qualify?

The course lasts 3 days in total with three examinations; one for each unit. On successful completion, candidates will be able to apply for a licence from the SIA to work as a security guard at a cost of £245.00. We will supply SIA licence application forms and provide support to candidates with completing their applications.
